Quick Tip: Backwards Meal Planning
What is backwards meal planning? Simply put, it is starting from where most people end when it comes to meal planning. Most people pull their recipes, make a list of ingredients they will need and go shopping based off of that list. But backwards meal planning is basing your menu off of what you have already in your kitchen.
You might think, “Wow, I don’t have enough in my kitchen to plan a meal!”, but this is where stocking up comes in very handy.
Here is the first step: Every week, look through your store ads or store deal posts on Saving at the Lake. Decide what is at your buy price, and if you need to stock-up on something, decide how much you need. You can also scan the clearance sections in your stores for stock up items. Stock up on items when they are at their lowest price, and then when you need them – you have plenty on hand.
Second, pick meals from what you already have on hand. Yes, you might have to pick up some produce & dairy products, but for the most part you will have to buy very little for your menu. This method also comes in handy when you have unexpected guests – no running to the store at the last minute!
The method might take some time to get started if you do not have a well stocked pantry, but once you have stocked up on the necessary items – you will see the savings!
