Hy-Vee: Fuel Saver Promotion (Starting Dec 5th)

I am sure most of you have heard about Hy-Vee’s new fuel rewards program coming soon, however I want to make sure everyone understands exactly how it works:

Starting Dec 5th, the new Fuel Saver program gives fuel discounts to shoppers who purchase grocery items in Hy-Vee’s special weekly fuel saver ad. In the ad, Hy-Vee will have up to 50 designated items that you can buy to receive discounts on your gas purchases. And yes, these items can be combined with coupons for maximum savings!

For example, if you buy Tide laundry detergent, you can earn 2 cents off per gallon. There is no limit on how many discounted items you can buy.

If an item is marked 6 cents per gallon discount, you can buy three of them and receive an 18 cent discount.

Existing Upromise Card and Saving Star Card holders will now use the Hy-Vee Fuel Saver Card. To register your Hy-Vee Fuel Saver Card for Upromise go to www.upromise.com. To register your Hy-Vee Fuel Saver Card for Saving Star go to www.savingstar.com.

You will be able to reedem your card at Hy-Vee, Casey’s & Shell Gas Stations. To receive the free fuel saver card, you can sign up at Hyvee.com or go to the Hy-Vee customer service counter.

The maximum discount you can receive per fill-up is equal to the current price of one gallon of gasoline, no matter how many dollars worth of savings you have accumulated on your fuel saver card. So, if gas is $3.22 you can only receive a discount of $3.22 during that fill-up. The remaining discount balance can be used on future fill-ups, but the discounts expire 30 days from the purchase of each fuel saver item.

So, the way I understand it using the example of $3.22 above:

If gas at hyvee is 3.22 a gallon and I have $16.00 in my fuel saver account, no matter how many gallons I fill my car with, my maximum discount on that gas fill-up is $3.22 ? Or to put it more easily understood, it comes to 1 FREE gallon of gas no matter how many fuel awards balance you have?

No, you can use the discount on more than one gallon. The discounted fuel cannot exceed 20 gallons each redemption transaction.

      This is from their site:
If discount earned exceeds the current price per gallon of fuel minus $0.019 to $0.109 per gallon, the remaining earned discount will roll over and be available for use on a future redemption transaction prior to expiration 30 days from date of purchase of each Hy-Vee Fuel SaverTM item.

One thing I learned is that as soon as you buy any amount of gas and use the per gallon discount, all of the discount on your card is reset to zero. For example, if you have accumulated $1.50 per gallon in savings on your card, and you buy one gallon of gas can for your mower and use the fuel saver card, you will save $1.50 ($1.50 x 1 gallon), and then your card is reset. If, however, you fill your SUV with 20 gallons of fuel, you would save $30 ($1.50 x 2o gallons). So . . . fill carefully.
